Code of Ethics for Physical Therapists


I. The role of physical therapists



Article 1

Physiotherapists have expertise in the body's normal movements and the diagnosis of deviations from them. They work in rehabilitation, training, prevention and education. The goal of physiotherapy is to promote and maintain physical and mental skills, health and functional ability, thereby promoting active participation and an improved quality of life.


II. Therapist and client


Article 2

A physical therapist respects the human dignity and right to self-determination of his or her client. He or she shall not make any racial or ethnic comments or discriminate against clients on the basis of gender, race, beliefs, or other inappropriate factors.

Article 3

A physiotherapist has the client's best interests at heart and strives to provide the best possible physiotherapy. He or she will refer the client elsewhere if he or she believes the client's best interests are better served that way.

Article 4

A physical therapist informs and advises their client about the treatment options available. They inform them about their rights related to their problem and treatment, and about the financial aspects of their relationship.

Article 5

A physical therapist respects confidentiality and shows complete confidentiality to clients, their families, and other clients in all respects.


III. Physiotherapist, the job, education


Article 6

A physical therapist works on the basis of their education and within the limits of their knowledge.

Article 7

A physiotherapist maintains, enhances and renews their knowledge and skills in accordance with

his/her subjects and the development of the profession. He/she contributes to the best of his/her ability to enhance the public's and authorities' knowledge of the nature, role and usefulness of physiotherapy.

Article 8

A physiotherapist should be careful about his or her reputation. He or she should remember that the reputation of the profession is based on the conduct of each individual within it.

Article 9

A physiotherapist shall not delegate to another person a task that requires specialized skills, knowledge and

the judgment of physical therapists.

Article 10

A physical therapist works with integrity and respect with colleagues and others involved in client matters, with the client's well-being as their guiding principle.

A physical therapist shares their knowledge and experience with colleagues, physical therapy students, and other physical therapists.

Article 11

A physical therapist who believes they have witnessed questionable, reprehensible or illegal

The physiotherapist has a duty to respond to such a violation. Depending on the seriousness of the alleged violation, he or she shall contact the perpetrator directly, his or her superiors, the physiotherapist ethics committee or the authorities.


IV. Physiotherapist and society


Article 12

A physiotherapist shall promote and improve physiotherapy for the benefit of society. He shall use his education and knowledge where he believes it may be of use. A physiotherapist shall be concerned with health service issues and, if appropriate, participate in their development.

Article 13

A physiotherapist is permitted to advertise his or her activities in a matter-of-fact and straightforward manner in accordance with the Health Practitioners Act. He or she shall in no way imply his or her professional superiority over other physiotherapists in advertisements, articles or interviews in the media.

Article 14

A physiotherapist's discussion of products and services should be professional. He should avoid claiming the superiority of one product or service over another.
