Founded on April 26, 1940
Role and service
The association is divided into a professional department and a wage department, and it is assumed that physiotherapists are members of both.
Professional membership is only for physical therapists who, for some reason, work in a field other than physical therapy and receive salaries under contracts other than those handled by the association, but who nevertheless wish to maintain their professional connection with the association.

Board and committees of the Icelandic Association of Physical Therapists
The Icelandic Association of Physiotherapists is a professional association and union based on cooperation, responsibility and active participation of its members. The association's board and committees play a key role in shaping policy, promoting professional debate and ensuring the advancement of the interests of physiotherapists throughout the country.
The board of directors is responsible for the overall management of the association and works to implement its policies and objectives in accordance with the resolutions of the general meeting. Committees and working groups handle specific issues, such as professional development, event planning, ethics, education and international cooperation.
By building on the knowledge, experience and drive of its members, the association works to strengthen the position of physiotherapists in Icelandic society and enhance the quality and professionalism of the services they provide.

History of the group:
An interest group on neurophysiotherapy was founded more than 20 years ago, but meetings ceased for several years. In March 2009, we decided to revive the group's activities and the first meeting was held on March 5, 2009 at the ÍSÍ building in Laugardalur. Eight physiotherapists attended the first meeting and five others signed up for the email list. It is clear that there is a great interest in collaboration and speculation about physiotherapy for individuals with neurological diseases or symptoms from the central nervous system. The goals of the interest group were presented at the first meeting and the tasks for the next meetings were determined. Another meeting was held on May 29, 2009, and they have been held occasionally since.
The group's goals:
1. Examine the criteria and work of other professional groups and uncover goals that were set out when a professional group in neurophysiotherapy was first established approximately 15 years ago.
2. Disseminate information about conferences, lectures, courses, articles and other related matters
3. Coordinate the use of measuring instruments and disseminate knowledge of measuring instruments, research, and practical aspects
4. Discuss and review research and developments in the field
5. Create a group email list of physiotherapists interested in neurophysiotherapy
6. Possibly going to a conference abroad together

The group's history, role and main goals:
In the years 1995-19977, the Icelandic Society of Professionals in Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation was founded. This was done in connection with the preparation of the Nordic conference on cardiac rehabilitation, The VIth Nordic Congress on Cardiac Rehabilitation, which was held in Reykjavík in 2002. After that conference, this society went dormant, but professional groups were established for cardiac physiotherapy on the one hand and pulmonary physiotherapy on the other.
The role and main goal of the Professional Group on Cardiac Physiotherapy is to be a forum for the exchange of views on cardiac physiotherapy and cardiac rehabilitation and to promote education and increased professionalism in that field.
In addition to the aforementioned Nordic conference, two major courses/symposia on cardiac rehabilitation have been held in Iceland in recent years. The first is a course on Treatment and Rehabilitation of Patients with Heart Failure held in 2000, and the Symposium on Cardiac Rehabilitation held in connection with the Icelandic Medical Days in 2008, where several of Europe's leading academics in the field of cardiac rehabilitation came and gave talks.
Two foreign conferences, accessible to us in Iceland, should be mentioned, which are a major professional forum in the field of cardiac rehabilitation and prevention. On the one hand, they are organized by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and are called EuroPRevent and are held annually. On the other hand, there is an annual conference organized by the American Association of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation.
These organizations also offer a variety of educational programs that are worth checking out. Information about the programs can be found on the organizations' websites www.escardio.org and www.aacvpr.org

A lymphatic drainage expert group was established on March 13, 2004.
The goal of the professional group is to promote this treatment within physiotherapy through article writing and presentation, to promote the regular offering of courses in Iceland, to support those who have already attended courses related to this in Iceland and are interested in or are providing this treatment, and to try to keep the group together.
The professional group was expanded into the 'Professional Group on Rehabilitation of Cancer Patients and Treatment of Lymphedema' at a renewed founding meeting on September 24, 2015.
