This 2-day indroductory course covers the foundations of Dry Needling, the myofascial pain syndrome, trigger points and the clinical highlights of dry needling. The course is a hands on course. Participants practice Dry Needling of the top 20 muscles under consistent supervision among each other.

The detailed knowledge of three-dimensional topographic anatomy is systematically put into practice. Participants are taught to emphasize and practice the use of anatomical landmarks, the potential danger zones and the correct selection of the needle in order to guarantee a safe Dry Needling technique. Participants practice Dry Needlingg under close supervision. Theoretical training includes pathophysiology, etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, clinical practice of myofascial trigger points, and myofascial dysfunctions and pain syndromes, as well as safety, indications, contraindications, and the hygiene rules of hygiene of Dry Needling. You will also gain an insight into evidence based practice in the fields of Dry Needling and myofascial pain

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, participants will ...

  • understand the basic scientific backgrounds of the myofascial pain syndrome and of trigger points.
  • be able to identify the Top 20 muscles by surface anatomy, palpation and function. They will also understand their clinical symptoms and perpetuating factors.
  • be able to identify the features of trigger points by physical examination and apply this knowledge to the top 20 muscles.
  • understand the specific indications and contraindications of Dry Needling.
  • have the ability to apply the safety rules for Dry Needling.
  • be able to perform Dry Needling of the top 20 muscles.
  • understand the possible side effects and complications of Dry Needling and will be able to react appropritately.

Johnson McEvoy is a Chartered Physiotherapist in private practice in Ireland. He graduated with a BSc in physiotherapy in 1993 from Trinity College Dublin and subsequently worked in the USA for four years.  He holds a masters degree in sports physiotherapy (2004) and a doctorate from the University of St Augustine in Florida (2008). He works as head physiotherapist with Irish Amateur Boxing since 2003 and was an accredited Olympic Physiotherapist in Athens in 2004. He has a keen interest in myofascial pain and dry needling and tends to have a multimodal approach to patient care. In Ireland since 2004 he has trained over 500 physiotherapists in trigger point palpation and has  co-authored a chapter reviewing trigger point reliability studies (2009). He is an instructor with the DGSA (David G. Simons Academy) and has taught dry needling in Ireland since 2006.
