The primary purpose of Dr. Collins, Kontos, Mucha and Kochik's visit and presentations is to introduce clinicians in Iceland to current clinical profile-based approaches to treating concussion. A secondary purpose is to promote awareness of concussion in the general sports population, including athletes, coaches, sports administrators, and parents.
On Day 1, we will focus on a clinical audience and include didactic presentations, panel discussions, and breakout sessions with case presentations for both physicians, psychologists, physiotherapists. This day is aimed towards professionals who work or are interested in working in concussion treatment and management.
On Day 2, we will focus on the general sports audience and include informational presentations emphasizing awareness and the importance of concussion clinical care. Day 2 will be open for all member of the public and will include a presentation about the study Concussion in Icelandic athletes – A multi-modal study.
The UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program was established in 2000. It is the first and largest research and clinical program focused on the diagnosis, evaluation and management of sports-related mild traumatic brain injury in athletes of all levels. Dr. Collins' expertise attracts many elite and professional athletes from around the world to seek his comprehensive care.
The program is the first of its kind and is a global leader in testing, treating, and researching sports-related concussions. With over 17,000 patient visits each year, more than 30 staff members treat high school, college, and pro athletes — including many from the MLB, NHL, and NFL — from across the United States

Objective: To introduce clinicians to a clinical profiles-based approach to concussion care to foster more effective, evidence-based clinical care for this injury in Iceland.
Clinical Profiles-based Approach to Assessing and Treating Concussion
Dr. Michael Collins
Dr. Collins will describe a clinical profiles model of concussion care, including assessments and targeted treatments, along with evidence supporting this approach.
Emerging Findings in Concussion – From Risk Factors to Treatment
Dr. Anthony Kontos
Dr. Kontos will analyze new evidence for the role of risk factors and assessment outcomes on prognosis; and the effectiveness of treatments for concussion.
Vestibular/Ocular Assessment and Rehabilitation for Concussion
Dr. Anne Mucha
Dr. Mucha will discuss current approaches to assessing and treating vestibular and ocular symptoms and impairment following concussion.
Cervical spine involvement in concussion injuries
Živa Majcen Rošker
Živa will discuss the possible involvement of cervical spine related functional deficits following concussion. Physiotherapeutic modalities for preventing and treating cervicogenic deficits in those with concussion will be presented.
Return to Sport/Activity: The Role of Exertion
Dr. Victoria Kochik
Dr. Kochik will describe emerging approaches to dynamic and aerobic exertion testing that inform return to sport/activity decisions.
Panel Discussion

The panellists will discuss key topics from the earlier sessions and respond to audience questions.
